Locum Tenens Surgical Coverage
Dr. Cohn has provided locum tenens general surgical coverage since 1997. He is a Harvard-trained, board-certified general surgeon who maintains active licenses in New Hampshire, Maine, and Vermont. He was recertified in general surgery by the American Board of Surgery January 2006.
Prior to obtaining his MBA from the Tuck School at Dartmouth, Dr. Cohn was Associate Professor of Surgery at Dartmouth and Chief of Surgical Oncology at the VA at White River Junction, VT. Everywhere that he has worked, he has interfaced seamlessly with physicians and allied healthcare professionals, as evidenced by the following comments:
Dr. Cohn has served as an invaluable member of our surgical service from the onset. He has approached his responsibilities at Mayo in a manor typically uncharacteristic of a locums – he has invested himself in the organization as an “owner” rather than a “renter”.
In effecting his role at Mayo Regional Hospital Dr. Cohn has interfaced with a broad cross section of our organization from peers to support staff, nursing staff, and administration. All of these interactions have been exemplary with positive feedback across the board. Dr. Cohn enjoys the reputation of a competent surgeon and one who approaches his clinical responsibilities with a commitment to strong interpersonal relationships with his patients. He has also served as a mentor to a new general surgeon who joined our staff approximately a year and a half ago.
In addition, we have benefited from Dr. Cohn’s national perspective on physician-hospital issues in which he is a recognized thought leader and ACHE faculty member. One of his accomplishments at Mayo was in his role as a facilitator of a medical staff discussion on ways to improve physician engagement and a coordinated care task force of physicians and nurses from Surgery, Medicine, and the ED, both of which have improved communication and collaboration.
Currently, he is contributing in a significant fashion to an orientation program for the new surgeon who will be joining us later this summer.
In short, Ken has been a pleasure to work with over the last several years and I can unequivocally say that he would be a valuable addition to any medical community. Ralph Gabarro, FACHE, President & Chief Executive Officer, Mayo Regional Hospital
Dr. Kenneth H. Cohn has provided locum tenens general surgery coverage at my hospital since 2001. Ken helped us out tremendously when one of our general surgeons left, and it took several years to recruit another. His coverage allowed the two remaining surgeons to have a break from every other night coverage and to take family vacations knowing that their patients would be covered. Everyone who worked with Ken enjoyed his company and valued his surgical judgment and operative skill. He was such a favorite of nurses, physicians, and administrators that we offered him a full-time position at our hospital.
We also appreciated Ken’s insights into physician engagement and leadership. Ken helped us start a process to improve our efforts in this regard, which has begun to pay off for us.
